Abstract

The rapid integration of renewable energy sources and inverter-based resources is transforming modern power systems, creating new challenges in grid stability, voltage regulation, and frequency control. This industry talk explores the emerging role of synchronous condensers in providing reactive power support, physical inertia, and short-circuit strength to enhance power system resilience. Through international case studies and practical industrial experience, the session compares synchronous condensers with other grid support technologies such as STATCOMs and hybrid solutions, offering valuable insights for utilities, renewable energy developers, system operators, researchers, and students working towards a stable and reliable energy transition.

This invited talk explores the application of AI-assisted predictive maintenance in steam turbine operations through real-world insights from a 220 MW turbine generator overhaul in Sub-Saharan Africa. It highlights the use of predictive analytics, condition monitoring, and intelligent maintenance strategies to improve power plant reliability, operational efficiency, and asset performance.
